Discipleship
Open Heaven Sozo discipleship is a three year commitment for our Christian experience, so it might be helpful to understand it from a biblical perspective.
Our mission is to develop big people, not big church. Develop a deeper intimacy with God and other believers. Learn and live out Biblical Kingdom Values. Learn to walk in the power and gifts of the Holy Spirit. Learn to study and love Scripture.
Our core verses
Matthew 28:16-20 NKJV
The Great Commission
16 Then the eleven disciples went away into Galilee, to the mountain which Jesus had appointed for them. 17 When they saw Him, they worshiped Him; but some doubted.
18 And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. 19 Go [a]therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” [b]Amen.
John 15:4-11 NKJV
4 Abide in Me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in Me.
5 “I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in Me, and I in him, bears much fruit; for without Me you can do nothing. 6 If anyone does not abide in Me, he is cast out as a branch and is withered; and they gather them and throw them into the fire, and they are burned. 7 If you abide in Me, and My words abide in you, you[a] will ask what you desire, and it shall be done for you. 8 By this My Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit; so you will be My disciples.
Love and Joy Perfected
9 “As the Father loved Me, I also have loved you; abide in My love. 10 If you keep My commandments, you will abide in My love, just as I have kept My Father’s commandments and abide in His love.
11 “These things I have spoken to you, that My joy may remain in you, and that your joy may be full.
Deuteronomy 32:30 NKJV
30 How could one chase a thousand,
And two put ten thousand to flight,
Unless their Rock had sold them,
And the Lord had surrendered them?
- So what is discipleship according to the Bible? The word for “disciple” is a learner who follows a master teacher. In contrast to our current Western era, learning in Jesus’ time was very relational and holistic. “Discipleship meant much more than just the transfer of information . . . it referred to imitating the teacher’s life, inculcating his values, and reproducing his teachings, learning to abide in him, and letting him abide in you, Total surrender.
- Therefore, Christian discipleship connotes a relationship through intimacy with Jesus, Holy Spirit, and Father God, following them, and adhering to their way of life because their teaching shapes your own worldview through the scriptures, activation, prayer, worship, and consecration to his call and purpose in you.
- Jesus’ expectation for his followers was clear: to become more and more like Himself (Luke 6:40). “In the heart of a disciple there is a desire, and there is a decision or settled intent. The disciple of Christ desires above all else to be like him . . .
- Jesus then told them how this would happen: “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself, take up his cross daily, and follow me” (Luke 9:23, ESV).
- Becoming a disciple of Jesus required a calculated choice to follow Him in the midst of hard teachings (John 6:60-66). Thus we understand the costly nature of Christian discipleship and the need to calculate whether we are willing to invest fully in this all-encompassing endeavor (Luke 14:28).
- What you can expect through this program. Develop a Christ-like character, build integrity and maturity in your walk and within the body , preparing you for future positions of responsibilities , spiritual influence, and leadership understanding and operating in the five fold ministry.
